Everyone wants to pay less tax, but in order to do that, you need to know what you can claim – and what you can’t. You might be surprised by what items you can claim. Check out the checklist below and be sure to educate your staff if they are required to pay upfront for their uniform. As always, if in doubt check with your registered tax agent, or whoever is managing your tax.
If used for work and/or business purposes the cost is fully deductible if $300 or less. If more than $300, it must be Depreciated.
Dry cleaning expenses can be claimed if the cost of the clothing is also deductible. This can be particularly helpful when a suit is part of your compulsory work uniform. Dry cleaning may extend the life of your suit.
You can claim glasses and goggles, providing they are for protective use only.
You are entitled to claim laundry expenses if the cost of clothing is allowable. Reasonable claims of up to $150 do not need a record to prove the expenses.
You can claim a deduction for protective equipment, such as harnesses, goggles, safety glasses, breathing masks, helmets, and boots. Claims for sunscreen, sunglasses and wet weather gear is allowed if they are used to provide protection from the natural environment while you are at work.
Diaries, logbooks, pens, paper and other stationery items used for work or in your home office. These include branded stationery items that can be used for promotional purposes. This is ideal if you are interested in branded merchandise for your business.
Claims for sunglasses, hats and sunscreen allowed for taxpayers who work outside.
